As a wedding and portrait photographer in Erie, PA, photographing life’s special moments is a passion of mine. Recently, I had the honor of capturing the engagement of two of my favorite people. Our associate photographer, Kayla, thought she was participating in her own Halloween style photoshoot. However, her boyfriend, Erik planned a hauntingly unique Halloween proposal.
Erik and Kayla’s Story
Erik and Kayla met in 2016 as students at Penn State University. They became inseparable, even though Erik never officially asked Kayla out on a date. In 2018, we hired Kayla to join our photography team as the associate photographer. Erik eventually joined our team to help us with photographing the Gannon Sports and Erie Otters. When Erik laid out his plans to propose during a photoshoot Kayla had designed, we were more than happy to help make it happen.
The Scary Photoshoot
Kayla originally proposed the idea to create a photoshoot inspired by the 2017 horror film “IT” capturing her dressed as Pennywise with Erik as her victim. Erik thought this would be the perfect opportunity to ask Kayla to marry him, even though he still had never officially asked her on a date. So, we picked a date and planned the shoot per Kayla’s directions. Our photoshoot began at an old, abandoned house on a friend’s property. We then moved to the 4th Street bridge near Kayla and Erik’s old apartment to finish out the session. For me, themed engagement sessions are always unique and fun. However, this one was particularly exciting, especially as we neared the surprise at the end.
The Proposal: A Halloween Engagement
As we were wrapping up the photoshoot on the 4th Street bridge, Erik suddenly got down on one knee. Kayla, completely caught off guard, laughed at his next words. After four years, Erik finally asked, “Will you be my girlfriend?” Then, he followed up by asking her to be his wife. Of course, Kayla enthusiastically said yes.
I am so happy for Erik and Kayla and thrilled to have been given the opportunity to shoot their special moment. Photography is so much more than the business of taking pictures. It carries the weight of being trusted to capture your most memorable moments that are kept and passed down for generations to see. Got ideas for your own Halloween or themed engagement session?
