Our Top Ideas for Epic Engagement Photos

Here’s a question for you: what comes after “Engagement Season” and before “Wedding Season?” Engagement Photos Season! That’s right, and it’s our almost favorite season, second only to wedding season, of course! Friends, we love engagement sessions, and insist all of our wedding clients schedule one with us before their wedding day. And because our couples are the coolest couples around, we love creating the most awesome, out-of-the-box engagement sessions that show off your incredible personalities. So, we’ve got a list of super fun ideas to make your engagement photos stand out from the crowd. However, before we get to those, let’s chat real quick about why you should absolutely make an engagement photo session a non-negotiable on your pre-wedding to-do list.

Why You Need an Engagement Session

An engagement session may feel like an unnecessary expense, especially when you’re trying to fit into a budget, but we believe it is actually one of the most important steps toward your dream wedding day. Here are three reasons why:

  1. You get a chance to “practice” for your wedding day. Being in front of the camera constantly on your wedding day is a lot of work, and can be a bit overwhelming! Going through the motions for your engagement session makes photos on the wedding day go so much smoother! With a trial run, you can work out any nerves or awkwardness so you feel more relaxed and natural on your wedding day.
  2. You get to express your personalities in a way that you won’t be able to on your wedding day. Most of us don’t spend our normal lives dressed in a suit or a lacy white gown. An engagement session lets you show off who you are, on a normal day!
  3. We build rapport with one another. While we work hard during other times to build a relationship with each of our couples, an engagement session is the easiest way to create comfort, rapport, and understanding between us all. This helps immensely as we move through the wedding planning process, as well as on the wedding day.

Ideas to Think Outside the Box for Your Engagement Photos

Now that we’ve established that it’s super important for you to schedule an engagement session, we’d like to help you think bigger! We love creative couples, and we love nothing more than helping to bring out that creativity and fun! Here are some less common ideas to make your engagement session that much better.

Incorporate your furry friend!

You know we’re suckers for a cute pet! If you have a dog or cat that’s an important part of your family, bring them along!

Use (strategic) props.

While they can easily become cheesy or distracting, a well-thought-out prop can also add to your images. Thing about using items that are significant to your relationship, such as a favorite book, a special blanket, a board game, bottle of wine, or even a yummy treat like an ice cream cone.

Choose an unusual location.

We’ve shot in dozens of beautiful locations, and will always be happy to choose a vineyard or the beach, but we’re also game for a little of the unexpected, too! Maybe a vintage arcade, your favorite coffee shop, a little book store, or even create a typical date night.

Show off your personalities by letting your quirky sides shine through.

Love cosplay? Maybe grab a small prop to hint at that hobby. Collect costume jewelry? Wear a statement piece.

Recreate some of your favorite memories

Go back in time and relive your first date, first kiss, or the proposal by shooting in a special location. Or maybe you prefer a cozy night at home. We’d love an engagement session on the living room couch!

Want to go big? Try a themed shoot

Maybe you share a love for a particular TV show or movie, era, or something else. Consider theming your outfits or location to hint at that obsession.

Get adventurous

Instead of wanting to play it safe with traditional poses, try something different, like playing in the water, jumping off a dock, playing on a swing set, or something else that might be a bit out of your comfort zone. We’re all in!

Have fun with it!

The most important thing is to just have fun with your engagement session. Don’t take it too seriously and enjoy the process of capturing your love in a unique and memorable way. Hey, your wedding day is going to be programmed and full of expectations from a lot of people. Use this session as an opportunity to let loose and capture who you truly are!

We truly love engagement sessions, and we think they’re so important! If you’re recently engaged, and would like to chat about an engagement photo session, we’re game! Send us a message, and let’s get started!
